Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science
The Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS), the premier scientific body in the country was founded in 1944 and incorporated by Act of Parliament No 11 of 1966. At present, SLAAS has a membership that numbers over ten thousand, representing almost all disciplines of science.

85th General President
Dr. Parakrama Weligamage, Dr. Parakrama Weligamage, Senior Lecturer, Department of Agricultural Economics and Business Management, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, was inducted as the 85th General President of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) at a ceremony held on 08th January 2026 at the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Suresh Babu, Research Fellow Emeritus, International Food Policy Research Institute, USA, graced the occasion as the chief guest and Prof. Emeritus P. Abeygunawardena, Former Head, Department of Agricultural Economics, University of Peradeniya, was the guest of honour at this elegant occasion. Dr. Parakrama Weligamage declared “Networking in the sciences: 4 people & 4 the planet” as the theme for the year 2026.
